GOLDBERG
Matthew Johnson & Jonathan Ferrucci
St Pancras Clocktower - 1st May 2025
This project is the result of a collaboration between photographer Matthew Johnson
and pianist Jonathan Ferrucci. Over the course of a year - through conversations,
test shoots, and studio sessions - a final project emerged, culminating in this
audio-visual album. The album brings together Jonathan’s recording of the Goldberg
Variations and Matthew’s series of 32 photographs presented as a book with launch
evening mini-exhibition and live performance.
Each variation, paired with its corresponding image, creates a seamless dialogue
between movement, sound, and visuals, where the art forms enrich and deepen
each other’s impact
Movement and music are inseparable, whether it’s a Chopin Polonaise, an ABBA
disco hit, or a Fred Again gig. It’s rare to hear music without feeling the urge to move
- be it a subtle head bob, an exuberant jump, or a spontaneous interpretive routine in
your kitchen. Bach’s Goldberg Variations are no exception.
By responding intuitively to the music to create shapes, the images captured form
unique impressions for each variation - whether inspired by an overarching emotion,
a specific structural element, or the nuance of a two-bar phrase.
These visual stepping stones act as access points, opening new ways of engaging
with the music and inviting listeners to find their route through this monumental
composition, a cornerstone of the classical music repertoire.
