Benjamin Jackson -Composer, Cellist and Teacher.Benjamin Jackson -Composer, Cellist and Teacher.Since early primary school when he began to learn the piano, Benjamin had always wanted to be a musician. With extensive orchestral, performance and composition experience throughout his education, Benjamin graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Music from the University of Leeds in 2018 having achieved the Frank Toothill Memorial Award in his first year and certificates of commendation in both his second and third years in recognition of his high standard of work.Benjamin majored in composition in his final year at the University of Leeds, and has composed in a variety of styles. Most notably, as part of his studies, he composed his ‘Suite for Solo Cello’ (2018), which he also performed at the end of his final year. Since then, he has gone onto write and release his first instrumental album, ‘A Dream From Before’ (2019), and continues to compose a wide range of music in styles from classical to avant-garde and electronic. As a member of many ensembles during his education, Benjamin went on to complete a dissertation project on the benefits of orchestral membership as a young person, and now works as an accredited teacher with the Sheffield Music Hub, working with young people both in cello tuition and composition coursework. He was also manager of the Leeds University Union Music Society’s Chamber Orchestra, and has lead the cello section of the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra in performances in the UK and Europe, following in the footsteps of many great musicians. As a solo performer, in 2018 Benjamin performed a principal part in the world premier of Marc Yeats’ ‘Always The Beautiful Answer’ and has since developed a keen interest in new music. He is currently undergoing study for an ABRSM Diploma in Cello Performance under Julia Bradshaw.Benjamin has compiled and operated surtitles for song recitals at the Howard Assembly Room with Opera North, as well as being one of the first students to be part of an practical opera module with Opera North in which students experienced the preparations and practicalities of putting on an opera at a major opera house. His close work with the company was responsible for a growth in his love for opera, which is now demonstrated through his blog, in which he details his musical experiences and aims to highlight music which might be often overlooked. He hopes to use his platform to educate and inspire current and future musicians to explore what music means to them.https://www.benjaminpjackson.com/
